A new study based on data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows that e-cigarettes are both the most common and most effective method of quitting smoking among adults in the United States. The study, based on data from the National Health Interview Survey 2022, examined the methods used by people who quit smoking and how they affected the outcome.
According to a recently published study based on statistics from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), around 2.9 million US adults quit smoking cigarettes in the year 2022. Most of the successful smokers were white men under 55 years of age, college educated and without signs of depression.
E-cigarettes most popular method
53.9 per cent of quitters used some form of aid, such as nicotine replacement therapy or e-cigarettes. 40.8% of those who used e-cigarettes did so in combination with other tools and 26% used vejping alone.
Prescription medicines were much less common, used by only 8.1 per cent of successful quitters. Other methods without nicotine or medicines were used by 6.3% of smokers.
Education and age affect smoking cessation
The study found that those who successfully quit smoking were more likely to be younger and highly educated. They were also more likely to use vejp as an aid compared to those who tried but failed.
According to the researchers behind the report, a large proportion of people still try to quit smoking without any help at all, despite the proven success of e-cigarette users in particular. They therefore suggest that future smoking cessation programmes could be targeted at groups that are more difficult to quit, and that more focus should be placed on evidence-based methods.
A total of 13.1 million adults made an attempt to quit in the same year, but failed.
